Rum for breakfast?
Yes! And Rum French Toast isn't just for breakfast. It makes an equally elegant dessert, too, served with ice cream. And if you're in for another elegant breakfast dish, try my Easy Quiche recipe.
I'm sure it's been around for a very long time, but it became popular with the HBO series Mad Men.
You'll be delightfully pleased at what a splash of rum can do to one of the all-time favorite breakfasts. The first time I tried this, hubby was over the moon, and now we only make our French toast with rum.
Two keys to avoiding soggy French toast
There are two keys to avoid soggy french toast:
- Use plenty of butter so the bread browns nicely, and
- Make sure your pan is nice and hot - medium heat setting. Using a low heat is a sure-fire way to hinder browning and leave the interior of the bread wet and soggy.
Rum French Toast dessert?
Yes! Using thickly-sliced French bread gives this recipe a nice height, and topping it with ice cream (try vanilla or even rum raisin) will make a lovely dessert. Don't forget to sprinkle on the sugar and cinnamon too.
How to make Rum French Toast
INGREDIENTS
- 3 large eggs
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ⅓ cup dark rum
- 8 slices french bread, sliced 1½ to 2 inches thick
- 4 Tbsp unsalted butter
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a medium mixing bowl, add the eggs, cream, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and rum. Whisk until smooth and well-incorporated. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan, such as a pie dish.
- Soak the sliced bread in the egg mixture, about 45 seconds or so on each side. If you need to soak the slices in stages, place the soaked bread onto a plate while you soak the rest.
- In a non-stick skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the slices of soaked break and cook until nicely golden brown, then flip and cook until the same golden brown.
- Serve topped with a sprinkle of powdered or granulated sugar, a pinch of sprinkled cinnamon, and maple syrup. Enjoy!
Can I freeze Rum French Toast?
I wouldn't recommend freezing cooked French Toast. There's too much moisture that will bog the cook bread down and make it soggy.
Can I make Rum French Toast ahead of time?
Sure! Just slice the french bread ahead of time and seal it up as air-tight as possible without crushing the bread, then refrigerate. Mix up the egg mixture ahead of time too, then refrigerate it for up to a day. Before soaking the bread in the egg mixture, be sure to take both out of the fridge and bring them back to room temp.

Add the slices of soaked bread and cook until nicely golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until the same golden brown. If you cook the toast in stages, add more butter as needed.
- Serve hot topped with a sprinkle of powdered or granulated sugar, a pinch of sprinkled cinnamon, and maple syrup. Or serve it as a dessert and add some ice cream, too!
